Welcome to the 2020 Newberg Youth Football Season!

*Info as of 8/17/20/20:

Thank you for your patience as we navigate youth sport activities during the COVID-19 pandemic!  Here is the latest and greatest information regarding the 2020 youth football season:

Flag football will replace tackle football this fall.  Flag football is designated as a “minimal/medium contact” activity permissible in Phase 2 counties (Yamhill County is in Phase 2).  We are looking forward to a successful and fun flag football program giving players the opportunity to work on skill development and fitness.

  • The refund/reimbursement process has begun for those that paid for the 2020 season.  Paid participants will receive a full refund that should be credited within the next 72 hours.
  • Unfortunately, each player will need to reregister for flag football on the Newberg Youth Football website.  This is due to insurance issues as each player will now be registered under CPRD and not the TVYFL.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Link to register here:  Registration
  • Cost for flag football:  $95 (in-district), $105 (out of district)
  • Registration closes September 4, please register early to guarantee team placement.
  • Six-week season ending October 31.

Team Formation:

  • Flag football will be a 5 on 5 league with 10 players on each team.  Players can request a coach or teammate when registering online.
  • Teams will be broken up into the following:  3rd/4th grade league, 5th/6th grade league, 7th/8th grade league.  If we can get enough participants to form a separate 7th and 8th grade league we will do so.
  • All teams will consist of an equal number of players.
  • We are in need of coaches!  Please contact Julie Petersen @ or Nicole Mauter, NYR Registrar, at if interested.
  • Volunteer Coaching forms must be filled out/completed to coach flag football.  Link:  Coaching App
  • We will open this league up to teams outside the Newberg/Dundee area.

  • Practices will take place twice a week in the Newberg/Dundee area.  Practice time/place will be determined by coach.  Each player will be notified of team placement by CPRD prior to practices beginning.
  • Medical Forms not needed for flag football!

  • Games will be played on Newberg High School’s football field (2400 Douglas Avenue).  We would like the 5/6 and 7/8 boys to play on Friday nights under the lights but are still working on this with Newberg School District administration.  If we are not approved for Friday nights all games will be played on NHS turf field on Saturdays beginning September 26.  Games will not start before 9 am on Saturday mornings.
  • The NHS varsity coaching staff will be charge of game management, the facility and officiating games on Friday/Saturday on turf field.
  • Games will be 40 minutes with a running clock, two 20-minute halves and a 5-minute half time.
  • Each game includes a 15-minute warm-up.
  • No score is kept and there are no standings.
  • Three games will be run at the same time on the field.  Games will be across the field, 50 yards long by 20 yards wide WITHOUT ENDZONES.
  • Fields will be marked by colored cones.
  • Equal playing time for each player.
  • Each team has 4 downs to get a 1st down.
  • Teams may substitute freely.
  • No intentional contact.
  • Flag football rules here: Flag Rules
  • Game scheduled released week of September 7.

Equipment Provided by NYF:

  • Team jersey with number
  • Mouth Guard (must be worn during games)
  • Flag belt/flags
  • Footballs
  • Players provide cleats (football/soccer) as games are played on NHS artificial turf
  • No metal cleats
  • Players may wear gloves, elbow pads, knee pads.
  • Players’ jersey must be tucked into pants/shorts if they hang below the belt line.
  • Flags will be alligator (or clip) method.

We will follow state mandates regarding Recreational Sports in Phase 2.  Link here:  State Guidance.

  • Spectators will not be allowed on the NHS field for games but may be in the stands social distancing on Fridays/Saturdays.
  • No spectators at practice, coach and players only.
  • Masks/face coverings encouraged but not required when it is not feasible.

During these uncertain times it is our goal to keep kids connected to football and the NYF program in the safest way we can, as always, their health continues to be our No. #1 priority.

Newberg Youth Football 2020

Newberg Youth Football Families!

While the Newberg Youth Football Board monitors youth sport information and advice from the CDC, the state of Oregon and public health authorities, we wanted to update players and their families with tentative timelines regarding the 2020 youth football season.

  • We are continuing to push forward with what we can control at this unpresented time.  We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding as we work towards the 2020 fall tackle football season.

  • Reopening framework for youth and high school sports has not yet been communicated from the State of Oregon/Governor Brown’s office.

  • The Newberg Youth Football program is meeting and working with the TVYFL (and the 60 youth football programs participating in the TVYFL) to prepare for a modified season.  Our goal is to provide an activity that is safe for all involved!  Current scenarios include a flag football or 7 on 7 option if tackle is not allowed at the youth level.

  • Season will not start August 10 as previously planned.  We are looking at a potential September 1 start date.  This means gear distribution will not be taking place July 27, 28 or 29.

  • Please pass along to those interested, registration is still open on the Newberg Youth Football website.  We are encouraging potential players to register and select the ‘pay by cash/card’ option on the payment screen (this allows players to register and not pay for the season at this time).  Please use promo code ‘FOOTBALL’ to receive an additional $50 off the regular season price.

  • If flag football is the avenue the TVYFL wishes to pursue we will be changing the fee for participation for the 2020 season.  More info to come on what that fee will be after a decision is made concerning the season.

  • If the 2020 season is approved, the TVYFL will still be requiring a physical form be completed and turned in at gear distribution.  Link to form on Newberg Youth Football website:  OSAA Physical Form.

  • If the 2020 youth football season is cancelled, CPRD will be offering a full refund to each participant that previously paid in full.

As always, your child’s health and safety are our No. 1 priority.

Please stay tuned for future emails and visit us online at, or on our facebook page (Newberg Tigers Youth Football).  Questions?

* Info as of 5/29/20:

Hello Newberg Youth Football Families!

While the Newberg Youth Football Board monitors youth sport information and advice from the CDC, the state of Oregon and public health authorities, we wanted to update players and their families with registration information and tentative timelines regarding the 2020 youth football season.

Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) rules govern CPRD sports, including the Newberg Youth Football program.  Moving forward, youth football (and youth activities such as camps) will call for a phased-in approach with direction from county and state public health authorities and the OSAA.  These phases will guide Newberg Youth Football as we implement a careful and responsible commencement of play.  Below is a breakdown of the current phase for football:

  • Phase 1:   Conditioning and individual drills.  A player should not participate in drills with a single ball that will be handed off or passed to other teammates.  Contact with other players is not allowed and there will be no sharing of tackling dummies/donuts/sleds.  Protective equipment is prohibited.

Phase 2 and 3, currently in development, will be released by the OSAA once each county receives approval from the state.

Your child’s health and safety are our No. 1 priority – we are closely monitoring the situation and keep families updated on guidelines and recommendations from public health authorities.

While practices and games may be modified this year, we are planning and preparing to go ahead with the 2020 season.  Please join us!  Registration is open on the Newberg Youth Football website at (!  * If player is registered before June 30, use the discount code ‘FOOTBALL’ to receive an $50 off registration fee!  For those already registered, the $50 discount will be applied automatically and credited back to debit/credit card used within 3 business days from date of this email.

The NYF website has been updated with current dates, please note the new OSAA medical form.

Tentative timeline:

  • Registration ends = July 30
  • First practice = Monday, August 10
  • Gear distribution = July 27 (7/8), July 28 (5/6), July 29 (3/4)
  • First game = Saturday, September 12

If the 2020 youth football season is cancelled, CPRD will be offering a full refund to each participant registered.

Also, we are looking forward to the Newberg High School Youth Football Camp held July 13-16 ($84).  This 4-day non-contact camp, led by NHS varsity football coach Kevin Hastin, will take place on the NHS turf field for players in grades K – 8.  Register at, free jersey included!  This camp will run with guidance/requirements and recommendations from the Oregon Health Authority/Public Health Division/Kate Brown under Executive Order No. 20-25.  Coach Hastin and staff will be implementing a screening process at check-in, physical distancing, stable groups and intensified sanitation/disinfection of all camp equipment.

Please stay tuned for future emails and visit us online at, or on our facebook page (Newberg Tigers Youth Football).  Questions?

On behalf of the entire Newberg Youth Football program, be safe and stay healthy.

Best regards,

Julie Petersen
